The purpose of this practicum is to cultivate family nurse practitioner students to apply advanced knowledge of acute medical care in internal medicine and surgery, combined with the goal of family specialist nursing training. This practicum provides students with direct experience in the development of a systematic methodology for identifying patients and their families' needs for health care. The focus is on assessment, differential diagnosis, and the subsequent management of selected health problems for a caseload of hospitalized patients and community clients. Critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and problem-solving are emphasized. Weekly grand rounds will focus on cases presented by the students as well as specific topics that relate to the management of common health problems in acute care settings. Required for Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students in the first year of specialization with 12 clinical or community hours per week (4 credit hours). |
